It senses how much air is required and then adjusts to that need. How much do you depend on your furnace filter to clean your home? How often does it run? I would answer that with NEVER in the Fall and during Spring. Even during the Summer and Winter a typical System may come on only 6-8 hours a day and during extreme weather 12-16 hours. With Variable Speed we will run the fan 24/7/365. Besides variable speed, 2-stage is the most fascinating. All heating and cooling systems are sized for the hottest day or the coldest day of the year. On mild days, a 2-stage unit automatically comes on the low heat setting or low cooling setting, and then the unit picks a fan speed to match.
