Spring Cleaning is Good for Your Health!
The EPA has identified Indoor Air Pollutants as one of the top 5 Urgent environmental risks to public health. Poor indoor air quality triggers 50% of Illnesses. Americans spend 90% of their time indoors.
No matter how often you clean you would be shocked at how dirty your house really is. An average 1500 square foot home accumulates about 40 pounds (yes, 40 pounds) of dirt, dust, hair, skin flakes, dust mites, allergens, pollen, mold and animal dander. In each ounce of dust are 42,000 dust mites, the leading cause of Asthma & Allergies. Have you ever sat on the couch and see the sun shining thru and all the little floaty things in the air? Or better yet hit the couch and see millions of things fly into the air?
These tidbits of dust particles are in the air we’re breathing and going into our bodies. During the Summer and Winter when we have our house closed-up the indoor air is usually 4-10 times more hazardous that the outdoor air. Why? Well by closing up the house to stay warm or cold we are also trapping unwanted things indoors. Every time we do laundry, dishes, mop, wipe off the sink, cook etc, we are using chemicals that are trapped inside our home.
Fact: St. Louis was the 2009 Asthma capital of the USA. The number of children with asthma in St. Louis Metro is 3 times the National average. In some area schools 1 in 5 children suffer. Asthma accounts for more school absenteeism than any other chronic disease. Report on Asthma in St. Louis
Problems: even though you may have a filter in your furnace you may have duct leakage problems, improper circulation, not enough “run time” to clean the air properly or maybe just not the right type of filter to clean the air properly.
